Specialised Casework

TAS has some casework capacity as a Resource Unit with one Solicitor but the emphasis is on specialised cases and public interest cases to test particular aspects of law or practice. TAS will identify cases itself and also rely on others in the community to identify and monitor illegal and unethical practices, and areas of law which are inadequate for tenants and can be tested.

Education

TAS provides education direct to tenants through:

Training

TAS continues to provide a range of tenancy law training to community workers across WA including:

Training can also be designed to meet particular needs of different groups.

Policy/Representation

TAS' policy and representation work on issues affecting tenants is a key part of our work to alleviate tenants disadvantage in the rental market and improve access to appropriate, affordable and secure rental housing. TAS is represented on a number of committees and organisations including the National Association of Tenant Organisations, and the Housing Advisory Committee to the Minister for Housing. TAS also prepares submissions on key issues affecting tenants including issues like the GST and its impact on rents and tenant databases and the effect on tenants due to them not being regulated by privacy laws.

Access and Equity Work - TAS is committed to access and equity as a strategy for TAS and other tenancy services under the Tenancy Advice and Education Program to target its services to best meet the needs of disadvantaged tenants. As part of its Resource Unit role TAS will be developing access and equity policies with local services and the Ministry of Fair Trading and helping services to implement such services.
