Welcome to the first edition of TAS TALK. This is the first edition of a TAS newsletter since 1996. The hard work and input of the TAS workers and the editing by our Community Legal Education Worker have made this edition possible. The newsletter contains feature articles and updates on each of three areas of work TAS is involved with: Advocacy, Education and Policy/Law Reform.
We hope to produce at least one newsletter every six months. This first edition is free. however future editions will only be available to members so have a look at the Membership Form .
The last few months have been a busy and unpredictable period for TAS. With future funding uncertainty TAS workers have done an excellent job in continuing their work with tenants.
I was away for five months on long service leave and during that time we employed Esther Shortland & Leanne Barron as Acting Coordinators who job shared the position with Shirley Southgate our Solicitor.
Joanne Walsh continues her great work as Tenant Advocate and Peter O'Dea now takes the position of locum Tenant Advocate.
In December 1998 we said farewell to our Administrative Assistant as she set out on a trip around the world and the completion of her Law degree.
During 1998 TAS made two submissions to consultations held by the Ministry of Fair Trading regarding a proposed model of a network of tenancy education and advice services in WA. The proposed model would see a number of education and advice services throughout the State, with a resourcing body providing back-up legal advice and support along with training and education to the network services. Key agencies have been invited to a Workshop with the Ministry of Fair Trading in late January 1999 after which we should know more about the future of tenancy services.
